Composition

When Judy Mann passed away in 2017, her wife, Ann Holmes, wanted to create a small memorial to honor her love of the Catonsville community and butterflies! Ann envisioned a community event where young artists would create a project and contacted Catonsville Rails To Trails for ideas.

Local artist Edward Williams quickly organized an event and designed a concept that allowed even the youngest artists to participate. He chalked in the silhouette figures and had the young artists fill them in. Judy lived along the Catonsville Short Line Trail and enjoyed watching the runners, walkers, cyclists, and dogwalkers depicted in the mural. Judy also loved butterflies, and dozens graced this mural.

This mural was painted on a concrete walkway the State Highway Administration installed in 2015. The walkway leads to Blakeney Alley and, eventually, to the Catonsville Short Line Trail. The walkway provides a sitting wall, allowing trail users to rest. It has a graffiti-proof coating that protects the mural from nature and vandals.
