Details of the mural:

  1. Jim Wharton and the Catonsville Steel Drum Band –This mural salutes the Catonsville High School Steel Drum Band and its founder/director, Jim Wharton. Jim founded the band in 1991 and was the first to organize a high school steel drum band in Maryland. The mural features several of the teen members, including Jacob Engers, a 2012 graduate and dedicated member.
  2. John Christ –John Wolfgang Knoll was born in 1965, lived on Overbrook Rd., and attended St. Agnes Catholic School and Catonsville High School. He took guitar lessons at Appalachian Bluegrass Shoppe and became a professional musician. He is best known as the original guitarist for the metal band Danzig and for his bluesy hard rock sound.  Christ was ranked 63rd in Guitar World‘slist of ‘The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists’.[1] This image was painted by artist Ian Herrick, a huge fan.
  3. Mansion in the background—The Summit mansion was on a hundred-acre tract on the south side of Frederick Road, west of the village center. Since the 1920s, it has served as an apartment house.
  4. Banjo Guy – This rendering is a nod to the bluegrass genre and the popular Appalachian Bluegrass Shoppe. Appalachian Bluegrass Shoppe is a family-owned music store and is the oldest music shop in Baltimore County.
